Shabbat Tzedek with Dr. Charles E. Carter Jr., CEO and Head of School at Beacon Academy

Gather with us onsite or online at 6:00 p.m. for an inspirational Shabbat Tzedek, a Sabbath of Justice, to celebrate the values of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with honored guest Charles E. Carter Jr., PhD, LICSW, who is CEO and Head of School at Beacon Academy. Beacon Academy called Temple Israel home for the first 17 years of the program, and we are honored to celebrate this deep and lasting relationship. This service is open to people of all faiths.

We are collecting food for the Greater Boston Food Bank. Please bring non-perishable packaged food with you to donate to this drive. Donations will be collected at the synagogue's entrance on Nessel Way.

 

Before the service, at 5:15 p.m., we will have Shabbat Mishpachah with pizza for all kids, teens, and families.

During Qabbalat Shabbat, young children may leave the service for a kids-only ice cream bar and activities. Babysitting will be available for kids over age one.

After the service, everyone is invited to an onsite festive oneg catered by local Black-owned restaurants and featuring the opportunity to join in Israeli dancing.

About Dr. Charles E. Carter Jr.

Dr. Carter has over 20 years of experience advancing social and economic justice for Black and Brown communities, focusing on children and families with limited resources. With curiosity, humility, passion, and humor, he works to transform systems supporting vulnerable populations.

Before joining Beacon Academy, he was a founding leader at Project Evident, co-creating initiatives like the Talent Accelerator and the Data & Evidence Equity Guide to integrate equity into evidence-building. Previously, as Deputy Director at Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child, he crafted strategies to scale innovation and build organizational capacity.

Dr. Carter serves as a Trustee for Concord Academy and the Foundation for MetroWest and advises the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. A former adjunct faculty member at Boston College, he has lectured at Harvard University and Simmons College. He holds an MSW from UNC-Chapel Hill and a PhD from Boston College and resides in MetroWest with his wife and two children.
